questions. The first question was, what are the injury dangers to athletes given decreased coordination and reaction time associated with marijuana use? Is this on right now? Yes. I don't know the statistical answer to that. I know that decrease in coordination and ability certainly affects performance at the plate. But I can't speak to what injuries are obtained from that. So that's work for someone out here to do. Our second question, for those of us that take care of high school teams, what are the special considerations in taking care of minors with regard to parental disclosure and protection of confidentiality? And do you have any specific advice to dealing with minors? It's a very important aspect of this whole conversation. I mentioned confidentiality a few times in my brief remarks. And, you know, we are obligated to navigate this challenging topic hand in hand with a legal representative of the players that we're trying to take care of. When you add in kind of the minor aspect of that, it becomes even a bit more challenging. But certainly, you know, just general confidentiality provisions, you know, private health protection or private health information protection laws are relevant with respect to certain aspects of mental health information, evaluation notes, treatment, things along those lines. But particularly state laws that can vary state by state. And it is one where if you are engaged with younger athletes, minor athletes, just making sure that you're, you know, entirely buttoned up, whether it's speaking with legal counsel or just doing some, you know, some research on your own to make sure that you're in a good place, to make sure that you're approaching the topic in the right way, managing the athlete and the situation appropriately. And perhaps, you know, the most important aspect of this is once you are in possession of or knowledge of particular, you know, private confidential information for the individual, if there is an obligation to inform the parent or the guardian, that's incredibly important in making sure that you keep it appropriately confidential is certainly something just kind of the best general advice I can give on that topic. Thank you. We have one minute left. To all of the speakers, what can we do to decrease the use of performance-enhancing drugs at the youth level when we and the athletes know that in some cases it actually works to help them succeed or make the team? That's a tough one to answer in a minute, but go for it. I have some experience on that. I think that I started out with my career thinking that education and training about the negative effects of performance-enhancing drugs were most effective. At this point, I think that testing and sanctions are the most important piece. Just to follow that up, I do think that there is a place for education, but, you know, rather than focusing on the science or kind of the biological aspects of the performance-enhancing substances and what they can do to the body and how they can perform on the field, there is a lot of data out there, published research, on the effectiveness of ethical considerations for younger athletes and just a simple message of this is right, this is wrong, this is playing the game the right way and this is not can have a huge impact on deterrence. Thank you all very much for participating. I personally have learned a ton about what MLB does, and I think you're a model for what sports organizations can do around the country and around the world. Thank you all very much.
Video Summary
The video transcript discusses several questions regarding injury dangers to athletes associated with marijuana use, special considerations in taking care of minors in sports, and ways to decrease the use of performance-enhancing drugs at the youth level. While the first question about marijuana use's impact on coordination and reaction time cannot be statistically answered, it is known to affect performance. Regarding minors, maintaining confidentiality is crucial, and legal representation is necessary to navigate the topic properly. State laws on private health information protection and disclosure may vary. Lastly, while education plays a role, testing and sanctions are deemed more significant in deterring performance-enhancing drug use among young athletes. The MLB's efforts are commended as a model for sports organizations globally.
