Anatomic Imaging in Sports Medicine Manuscripts: Pearls and Pitfalls for How to Approach Your Review
Derik L. Davis, MD
This presentation will provide guidelines for reviewers in evaluating commonly encountered anatomic imaging modalities in sports medicine manuscripts and discuss when anatomic imaging adds value to or detracts from the stated purpose of a manuscript. Attendees will learn to specify examples of imaging do’s and don’ts in manuscripts for reviewers to recognize with respect to study design, methodology, and interpretation of results.
Learning objectives:
After this educational activity, participants will be able to:
1. List commonly encountered anatomic imaging modalities in sports medicine manuscripts
2. Discuss when anatomic imaging adds value or distracts from the stated purpose of a manuscript
3. Specify examples of imaging do's and don'ts in manuscripts for reviewers to recognize with respect to study design, methodology, and interpretation of results
Understanding Statistical Graphics in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Research
James L. Carey, MD, MPH
This presentation will discuss some basic and advanced methods of visualizing data. Special emphasis will be placed on understanding statistical graphics that can be used to visually communicate complex relationships and uncertainty. Some examples taken directly from the orthopaedic sports medicine literature will be used to highlight key principles.
Learning Objectives:
1. To recognize some standard depictions of data- flow diagrams, box and whisker plots, and Kaplan-Meier survival curves- used in medical literature.
2. To discuss assessment of the content of the visualized data.
3. To briefly explore visual presentations of variation and uncertainty.
