AOSSM 2025 Self-Assessment
EXAM OVERVIEW

The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Self-Assessment Examination 2025

PURPOSE

The AOSSM Self-Assessment Examination is scored and recorded and designed to identify strengths and weaknesses in the clinical and practice management areas of orthopaedic sports medicine. It is also designed to assist practicing physicians and surgeons to maintain certification and prepare for the subspecialty board exam given by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS).

STATEMENT OF NEED

On March 20, 2003, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) approved a subspecialty certification in orthopaedic sports medicine to be administered by the ABOS. The content of this self-assessment was derived from eleven areas of orthopaedic sports medicine identified and provided by the ABOS, and covered in the subspecialty examination for orthopaedic sports medicine. For more information about the subspecialty certificate in orthopaedic sports medicine, please visit the ABOS website at www.abos.org.

In addition, a need for the AOSSM Self-Assessment Examination 2025 has been determined from information from past versions of the AOSSM Self-Assessment, education surveys, education course evaluations and the associated AOSSM Educational Curriculum.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This self-assessment should prove valuable to any orthopaedic surgeon and physician in the field of sports medicine or related fields of practice.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the Self-Assessment, participants should be able to:

  • Identify and assess orthopaedic sports medicine conditions
  • Develop appropriate treatment, including surgery, rehabilitation, medical management, orthoses, and other therapeutic measures in sports medicine
  • Apply critical concepts in sport medicine research
  • Review and analyze specific issues unique to the orthopaedic sports medicine practitioner with the goal of identifying strategies to improve patient outcomes.

EXAM REQUIREMENTS

DESCRIPTION OF SELF-ASSESSMENT

The AOSSM is offering the Self-Assessment in a web-based format. The time it will take participants to complete the Self-Assessment is approximately 12 hours. The web-based format is an online interactive database that contains 125 questions, associated graphics, explanations, answers, bibliographic references and an evaluation form. Participants will be issued a username and password to access the web-based version and will be able to answer questions and obtain individual and normative group scores as well as the explanation and answers to questions. When completing the Self-Assessment in the Examination Mode, preferred responses and references will be provided when all 125 questions have been answered. When completing the Self Assessment in the Learning/Interactive Mode, the preferred response and references are provided when the question is submitted. Participants will be asked to complete an evaluation of the Self-Assessment to obtain feedback about the enduring material. The participant may take the Self-Assessment multiple times during the year, but AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ will be awarded the first time the participant completes all questions and the evaluation. Normative data collected will only be recorded the first time the participant completes all questions and the evaluation.

AMA ENDURING MATERIALS REQUIREMENT

Credit for the Self-Assessment will be awarded only to physicians who meet at least the minimum performance level on the assessment as established by the AOSSM. The minimum performance level established for this enduring material is 51%. Physicians who do not achieve this minimum performance level may reset the Self-Assessment at no additional charge but are not eligible for MOC. (Effective July 1, 2011).
