Course Overview: 
 
When the clock is running and an athlete goes down, you need to be the one who takes control. This module is built for athletic trainers, team physicians, and sports medicine professionals who want to level up their sideline emergency response—without second-guessing or scrambling for backup.

The Team Physician Series does not include CME credit. 



David Flanigan, MD
 

Lead Faculty Member 

Dr. David C. Flanigan is a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. He is the Director of the Cartilage Restoration Center at the Jameson Crane Sports Medicine Institute, and a team physician for The Ohio State University Buckeyes. His clinical practice is focused on sports knee, and his research focuses on cartilage injury and restoration, meniscus injury, advancing meniscus repair, patellofemoral instability, ACL reconstruction and revision, and multiligament knee injuries.  He is an internationally recognized expert on the treatment of cartilage injuries and restoration and advancing techniques in osteochondral and meniscal repair and transplantation. He earned his BS in biology from Wheaton College, his MD from University of Iowa, and his orthopedic residency from Northwestern University. 







Kyle Borque, MD 

Contributing Subject Matter Expert 

 Dr. Kyle Borque is a knee sports medicine orthopedic surgeon at Houston Methodist Hospital. He currently serves as a team orthopedist for the Houston Texans and a team physician for US soccer. 

 He is a leader in the treatment of sports injuries to the knee, with specific research focus on ACL, MCL, and meniscus injuries. 






Walter Lowe, MD
 

Contributing Subject Matter Expert 

 Dr. Walter Lowe is a renowned Orthopedic Sports Medicine physician who holds prestigious roles as Chair and Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at UTHealth Houston, Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Memorial Hermann, and Medical Director of Memorial Hermann | Rockets Sports Medicine Institute. A certified Orthopedic surgeon, he specializes in sports-related knee injuries and is Head Team Physician for NCAA University of Houston Cougars, NBA Houston Rockets, and has 20 years of NFL Houston Texans experience as Head Team Physician. With extensive expertise and recognition nationwide, Dr. Lowe holds affiliations with notable medical organizations and has received several awards for his contributions to the Orthopedic Sports Medicine field. 





Matthew Matava, MD 

Contributing Subject Matter Expert 

 Dr. Matthew Matava is currently a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Physical Therapy at Washington University in St. Louis where he is also Fellowship Director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship. Dr. Matava earned his Medical Degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Six-Year Combined B.A./M.D. Program. He completed his internship and orthopedic surgery residency at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, followed by a fellowship in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery at the Cincinnati Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center. He is the recipient of several research awards including the AAOS Kappa Delta Award, the AOSSM O’Donoghue Award and the NCAA Research Award, and he is a member of Alpha Omega Medical Honor Society. Dr. Matava is currently the Medical Director of the NHL's St. Louis Blues and has cared for team for the past 28 years. He was the Head Team Physician for the St. Louis Rams for 16 years and was president of the National Football League Physicians Society from 2013-2015. He is currently the Medical Director for the St. Louis Battlehawks (UFL) and a team physician for the Washington University Varsity Athletic Program since 1996. Dr. Matava has authored over 220 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters dealing with orthopedic sports medicine topics. In 2019 he was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. Dr. Matava specializes in sports-related injuries in adults and children. Special interests include ligament injuries of the knee, meniscal repair and transplantation; articular cartilage injuries of the knee, and athletic injuries of the shoulder including instability and rotator cuff issues. 





Ryan Rauck, MD 

Contributing Subject Matter Expert 

 Dr. Ryan Rauck is a sports medicine and shoulder fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon who works at Ohio State where he is a team physician for the department of athletics.  



The Team Physician Series ensures you’re prepared for critical moments on the sideline—without relying on outside expertise—by developing your clinical judgement. Through real-world case studies from experts and practical scenarios, you’ll build the skills and confidence to make the right calls when they matter most.

 

This series is designed for athletic trainers, team physicians, and other sports medicine professionals responsible for sideline injury assessment and decision-making. Whether you’re working on the sidelines of a high school football game, covering a college basketball team, or supporting athletes in a resource-limited environment, this training equips you with the knowledge and skills to act decisively. Modules will be released quarterly in 2025.
