Seamless integrative healing across the graft-patient articular cartilage interface does not occur following osteochondral allografting (OCA) and this is thought to relate to eventual OCA failure. Through this AOSSM-JRF Ortho funded project we have identified a factor that stimulates growth and regenerative responses required for cartilage integrative healing in a human ex vivo OCA model.

Caroline Dealy’s research objectives are to understand disease mechanisms that underlie arthritis and post-traumatic osteoarthritis, and to develop clinically relevant preventative and/or treatment approaches for these conditions. Her focus is on the cellular response of articular cartilage to injury and ways to leverage these responses towards cartilage health, self-repair and regeneration. Caroline is active in research translation at UConn and is an inventor and startup founder; a Connecticut Woman of Innovation honoree and founding member and mentorship chair for Connecticut Women in Bio, a bioscience sector leadership organization. She is an alumnus of the ABCT/eLAB-NYC Startup Accelerator and faculty liaison for UConn’s NSF-iCorps site Innovation Accelerator program. She is founding director of state and university programs that have engaged over 300 students in biotechnology, innovation and entrepreneurship training, and she teaches courses for medical, dental and graduate students on regenerative medicine, clinical innovation and scientific writing. She has mentored 60 scientific trainees in her laboratory from undergraduates to junior faculty and is an author/coauthor on 54 journal publications.
