Team Physician Series

Sideline Emergencies IV: Non-Musculoskeletal Conditions in Sport

Course Overview:

Not every sideline emergency is an orthopedic injury. Heat illness, hypoglycemia, asthma/EIB, exertional chest pain, and infectious disease decisions can turn quickly. This demands clear leadership. This module is built for sports physicians and athletic trainers who need to read the scene fast, apply evidence-based protocols, and escalate care without hesitation. Through interactive, scenario-based learning, you’ll practice the skills that prevent crises before they start and manage them decisively when they do.

Learning Objectives:

  • Anticipate and prevent environmental threats with WBGT-driven heat policies, cold-weather prep, lightning EAPs, and altitude plans.
  • Conduct focused PPE screenings to surface high-risk patterns (e.g., RED-S, diabetes, asthma/EIB, mono).
  • Recognize and manage time-critical conditions: exertional heat stroke, severe hypoglycemia, respiratory distress, cardiac red flags, and infectious mononucleosis.
  • Apply clear sideline protocols and know when to activate the EAP versus make an urgent referral.
  • Coordinate roles, resources, and communication across coaches, ATs, EMS, and venue staff.

Make the Most of This Course

This course focuses on what matters in the moment. Built with expert insight and real-world scenarios, it prepares you to standardize policies, sharpen recognition, and lead confidently across sports and venues.

How This Course Prepares You

  • Know when and how to take immediate action: Use Red/Yellow/Green escalation rules to make the call.

  • Assess swiftly and accurately: Distinguish EIB from VCD/EILO; identify RED-S patterns; spot cardiac red flags.

  • Follow best-practice protocols: “Cool first, transport second” for EHS; glucagon-first approach for severe hypoglycemia; time-based RTP for mono.

  • Deliver clear instructions under pressure: Enforce written, rehearsed EAPs for lightning and diabetes; align roles with a common playbook.

  • Practice fast, informed decisions: Interactive cases, audio/video diagnostics, and rapid-fire drills build muscle memory for the sideline.

The Team Physician Series ensures you’re prepared for critical moments on the sideline—without relying on outside expertise—by developing your clinical judgement. Through real-world case studies from experts and practical scenarios, you’ll build the skills and confidence to make the right calls when they matter most.

This series is designed for athletic trainers, team physicians, and other sports medicine professionals responsible for sideline injury assessment and decision-making. Whether you’re working on the sidelines of a high school football game, covering a college basketball team, or supporting athletes in a resource-limited environment, this training equips you with the knowledge and skills to act decisively. Modules will be released quarterly in 2025.
