Sideline Emergencies III: Emergency Action Plan

 
Course Overview: 
When seconds matter, a well-executed Emergency Action Plan (EAP) can make all the difference. This module is built for sports physicians and athletic trainers who need to respond fast, lead with clarity, and calmly coordinate care in high-stakes sideline situations. Through interactive, scenario-based learning, you'll gain the confidence and tools to activate and execute an EAP in any environment.


Learning Objectives: 

  • Understand the high-stakes role of the EAP in sideline emergencies.
  • Activate and carry out an EAP with speed and precision. 
  • Coordinate spine boarding and other critical responses under pressure. 
  • Communicate clearly with team members, EMS, and bystanders. 
  • Adapt protocols to suit different sports, settings, and personnel.

F. Winston Gwathmey, MD 

Lead Faculty Member 

Dr. F. Winston Gwathmey is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at UVA Health and a nationally recognized leader in sports medicine. A Virginia native and UVA alumnus, he earned his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School and completed residency at UVA, followed by a prestigious fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and advanced hip arthroscopy training with Dr. Thomas Byrd. He returned to UVA in 2013, where he directs the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program and founded the hip arthroscopy program, performing over 200 procedures annually. A decorated educator and team physician for UVA and JMU, he is deeply involved in national orthopedic societies and surgical education. 


Matthew Matava, MD 

Contributing Subject Matter Expert 

 

Dr. Matthew Matava is a nationally renowned orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine. He serves as Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Physical Therapy at Washington University in St. Louis, where he is also Head Team Physician for WashU Athletics and Team Physician for the St. Louis Blues. A former athlete himself, Dr. Matava was inspired to pursue surgery after an ACL injury in college. He is President of the NFL Physicians Society and has been recognized as one of North America’s top sports knee surgeons. His career spans leadership in clinical care, education, and policy, including contributions to safety in youth and professional sports.




Stephen F. Brockmeier, MD 

Contributing Subject Matter Expert 

 

Dr. Stephen F. Brockmeier is the S. Ward Casscells Endowed Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia, where he also serves as Head Team Physician for UVA Football, Men’s Soccer, and Men’s Lacrosse. A UVA alumnus, he earned his medical degree and completed residency at Georgetown before pursuing a fellowship in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Reconstruction at the Hospital for Special Surgery. His clinical expertise includes complex shoulder reconstruction, ACL and meniscus repair, and shoulder arthroplasty. A leader in sports medicine research and education, he co-directs UVA’s Sports Medicine Fellowship and serves as Editor of the Video Journal of Sports Medicine. 

 




Edward Strapp, FP-C, TP-C, NRP, LAT, ATC  

Contributing Subject Matter Expert 

Edward Strapp is a seasoned flight paramedic, certified athletic trainer, and co-founder of Sports Medicine Emergency Management (SMEM). With extensive experience in emergency, tactical, and alpine medicine, Ed provides critical care and injury prevention in high-performance athletic and prehospital settings. He serves as a Rotational Athletic Trainer with the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team and was selected as a medical provider for Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics. A nationally recognized speaker, Ed shares expertise on topics such as spinal injury management and active shooter preparedness. Through SMEM, he helps professional and amateur sports organizations elevate emergency preparedness nationwide. 

 




Ashley Doozan Murray, EdD, MS, ATC 

Contributing Subject Matter Expert 

Ashley Doozan Murray is an Associate Athletic Trainer at the University of Virginia, where she has worked with the football program since 2018. She oversees the daily health care of student-athletes, including injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. Prior to UVA, she supported athletes at NC State, Michigan State, and Lamar University, with experience across sports including swimming, rowing, hockey, and football. A Grand Valley State graduate, she earned her master’s at Lamar while working with the Cardinals football team. A member of NATA and MAATA, she has presented regionally on innovative recovery techniques like cupping for myofascial release.  




Kelli Pugh, MS, ATC, LMT 

Contributing Subject Matter Expert 

Kelli Pugh is the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine at the University of Virginia and the primary care provider for the Cavalier football team. A leader in collegiate athletic training since 2002, she oversees all aspects of injury evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation. A UVA alumna, Pugh earned her bachelor’s in sports medicine before completing her master’s in athletic training at the University of Florida. She is a certified athletic trainer, licensed massage therapist, and CPR/AED instructor, with experience supporting U.S. and Canadian national teams. In 2010, she was named College/University Athletic Trainer of the Year by VATA.

Through real-world case studies from experts and practical scenarios, you’ll build the skills and confidence to make the right calls when they matter most.
 
This series is designed for athletic trainers, team physicians, and other sports medicine professionals responsible for sideline injury assessment and decision-making. Whether you’re working on the sidelines of a high school football game, covering a college basketball team, or supporting athletes in a resource-limited environment, this training equips you with the knowledge and skills to act decisively. Modules will be released quarterly in 2025.
