  Evaluation and Management of Common Non-Shoulder/Knee/Elbow/Hip Athletic Injuries   


This educational webinar focuses on the diagnosis and management of acute/subacute injuries that are commonly seen on the sidelines and office/training room and/or as a result of sports participation.  The clinical conditions addressed will include common sports-related injuries of the foot and ankle, core muscles/adductors, wrist/hand/finger, and hamstring injuries.  Both operative and non-operative management of these conditions will be discussed.

MODERATOR

Dr. Geoff Abrams is an Associate Professor within the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine.  He specializes in Sports Medicine/arthroscopy of the shoulder, knee, and elbow, upper extremity joint replacement, as well as tendon and ligament reconstructive surgery of the shoulder, knee, and elbow. He is Board Certified in Orthopedic Surgery, with a subspecialty certificate in Sports Medicine, and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), among others. He is actively involved in tendon disease research, focusing on the role of microRNA and tendon-derived stem cells in the pathogenesis of the disease. Dr. Abrams has authored or co-authored over 120 peer-reviewed scientific articles, over 30 book chapters, has given numerous invited presentation as well as presented original research at national and international scientific meetings.  He serves as Director of Sports Medicine for Varsity Athletics at Stanford University, Head Team Physician for numerous Stanford varsity sports, Assistant Team Physician for the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers, and previous Assistant Team Physician for the NBA’s Golden State Warriors from 2014-2019.  Dr. Abrams received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of California - San Diego. He completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Stanford University and went on to a Fellowship in Orthopedic Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.   








Dr. Robert B. Anderson
 The founding 
orthopaedic surgeon of the O.L. Miller Foot and Ankle Institute of OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, North Carolina, practicing there for 29 years.  Co-founder of the OrthoCarolina Foot/Ankle Fellowship in 1994.   Joined the Titletown Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Clinic in Green Bay as Director of Foot and Ankle in 2017 and returned to OrthoCarolina in 2023.  Served as a team orthopaedist to the Carolina Panthers from 2000-2017 and as associate team physician and consultant to the Green Bay Packers since 2017.   Served as Chair of the NFL’s Musculoskeletal Committee 2016-2024, overseeing all orthopaedic injuries and research in professional football.   He was named the NFL Physician of the Year in 2016, and recently received the Presidents’ Lifetime Achievement Award from the NLFPS/PFATS.  Is a past -president of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. And currently serves as the Executive Editor of 
Foot and Ankle International.  Graduate of the University of Mississippi and has been inducted into their Hall of Fame. 







Dr.
William C Meyers MD, MBA, is a Boston area native, who went to Choate and Harvard, then Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons, and, more recently, the Wharton School of UPenn. He played soccer and baseball in college; and concurrently held a full-time job at The Boston Globe. He was offered a professional baseball contract out of high school and signed a contract with a first-division Brazilian pro soccer team prior to medical school. After achieving the starting goalkeeper position, he decided to return to the USA and devote his life to medicine. Bill then completed an 8-year surgical residency at Duke University Medical Center, which included two years of basic science, and then joined the Duke faculty as chief of the divisions of general, GI, hepatobiliary and minimally invasive surgery. He did much of the original work in the development of modern liver surgery techniques and minimally invasive surgery and wrote the initial NEJM paper on laparoscopic cholecystectomy. He was PI on continuous RO-1 and VA Merit Review basic science grants in liver physiology, had a huge liver/GI practice, and maintained educational and administrative positions in the medical school. He brought large grants from industry, including US Surgical Corp, Smith and Nephew, and Glaxo into academic institutions. He has also served on various boards, including Intuitive Surgical, UMass Medical School, and Team Impact. Following Duke, he found success as surgery chairman and assistant dean at the University of Massachusetts, where he helped build that institution into a prominent health system. From there, he journeyed to Philadelphia and helped lead MCP-Hahnemann University out of bankruptcy into profitability to create Drexel University College of Medicine. In 2010 in Philadelphia, he founded the Vincera Institute, a successful and prestigious clinical and research institution in core medicine, a field which he has essentially developed. The institute treats athletes and other performers from all over the world. Bill has served as team physician or consultant for many professional teams and universities in all the major sports in the USA and abroad. Bill maintains a heavy clinical practice and devotes much time and effort to using sports as a vehicle to develop our youth. That includes his Vincera Foundation, Team Impact, and the (Be)Philly Foundation.   








Dr Jeffrey Yao is currently the Orthopaedic Hand and Upper Limb Fellowship Director at the Stanford University Medical Center. He has been the Editor-in-Chief of the Yearbook of Hand and Upper Limb Surgery and was also on the editorial board of HAND and reviews manuscripts for many other journals for their suitability for publication. He is the editor for textbooks on the topics of Scaphoid Fractures and Nonunions, Ulnar Wrist Disorders and Carpal Instability. He is also the editor of two special issues of Hand Clinics and Current Orthopaedic Practice.

Dr Yao is an active member of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Association of Hand Surgery, the International Wrist Arthroscopy Society, The International Wrist Investigators’ Workshop, the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the Western Orthopaedic Association.
