 Advanced Meniscal Repair Solutions and Knee Preservation in 2025 


This course will outline tips and tricks to treat various meniscal pathologies. We will have a case-based approach to the different types of tears that we encounter in the knee and the various options available to treat these tears. Additionally, focus will be on repair solutions and ultimately knee preservation techniques.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Correctly identify the different types of meniscal pathology.
  2. Explain the different options available to treat various meniscal tears.
  3. Compare options to preserve the meniscus and assist in healing as well as preserving the knee joint.

MODERATOR

Dr. Chaitu Malempati, MD, FAAOS completed a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Kentucky. He is currently on staff as an Associate Professor in the department of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at the University of Kentucky. He also serves as the medical director and head team physician for Western Kentucky University Athletics and Western Kentucky University football. Additionally, he is committee member for the AOSSM, AANA and the SOA. For the state of Kentucky, he functions as councilor for the Southern Orthopedic Association. Also, he is a peer reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine. He has published several articles in the field of sports medicine in multiple peer-reviewed journals. Since starting practice, he has spoken at several meetings nationally and internationally on a broad range of topics related to sports medicine. Furthermore, he is highly involved in education in teaching labs and courses and speaking at roundtables and regional meetings. His practice mainly entails sports medicine with a focus on complex knee, shoulder, and elbow injuries in addition to shoulder arthroplasty.   




Dr. Aravind Athiviraham, MD, FRCSC, FAOA, FAAOS, FAANA is Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Chicago. He attended McGill University medical school and completed his orthopedic residency at Queen's University. He completed his orthopedic sports fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and a knee reconstruction fellowship with the Insall Scott Kelly Institute. He serves on the Editorial Board for the American Journal of Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Journal, and Video Journal of Sports Medicine. He is Chair of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Enduring Education Committee and a member of the Arthroscopy Association for North American (AANA) Advocacy and Education Committees. He completed the prestigious AANA Traveling Fellowship in 2019 and the AOSSM-SLARD Traveling Fellowship in 2024.
