Posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) remains one of the most important long-term consequences of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, with meaningful implications for knee function, return to activity, and joint health over time. This webinar brings together experts to review emerging evidence spanning biologic mechanisms, advanced imaging, and data-driven approaches to understanding risk after ACL injury and reconstruction. Topics will include molecular and synovial biomarkers, quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) changes associated with early cartilage degeneration, and machine learning–based approaches to patient stratification and outcome prediction. Attendees will gain an evidence-informed overview of current concepts that may help guide clinical decision-making and risk assessment following ACL injury.The four articles are attached for prior review.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this educational activity, learners should be able to:
  1. Describe biologic and biomechanical mechanisms linking ACL injury and reconstruction timing to PTOA, including joint instability and inflammatory responses.
  2. Interpret machine learning-based patient stratification models to identify predictors of outcomes after ACL injury, including risk of PTOA and progression to arthroplasty.
  3. Apply quantitative MRI and synovial fluid biomarkers to assess early cartilage degeneration and stratify PTOA risk following ACL reconstruction.

MODERATOR

Aravind Athiviraham, MD, FRCS(C), FAANA, FAOA, FAAOS, is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Chicago. He serves on the AOSSM Traveling Fellowship Committee and is the Illinois Representative to the AOSSM Council of Delegates, having previously chaired the AOSSM Enduring Education Committee. He also serves on the AANA Advocacy and Education Committees and the AAOS Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Instructional Course Committee. Dr. Athiviraham serves on the editorial boards of Arthroscopy, the Video Journal of Sports Medicine, and the American Journal of Sports Medicine and is Team Physician for University of Chicago Athletics.





Scott Rodeo, MD, is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and is an Attending Surgeon at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital and the Hospital for Special Surgery, where he is Co-Chief Emeritus of the Sports Medicine and Shoulder Service, Vice Chair of Orthopaedic Research, and Co-Director of the Orthopaedic Soft Tissue Research Program. He also serves as Director of the Center for Regenerative Medicine at Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Rodeo is Head Team Physician for the New York Giants Football Team, and he served as a Team Physician for the United States Olympic Team in 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016. His clinical practice involves orthopaedic sports medicine, with specialty interest in complex knee reconstruction (ligament, meniscus and cartilage surgery), tendon repair in the shoulder and other joints, shoulder instability, and osteoarthritis surgery in the knee and shoulder. He runs a translational research laboratory program investigating the cellular and molecular mechanisms of soft tissue repair. 



 

 

Mario Hevesi, MD, PhD, practices knee preservation and comprehensive hip care, including preservation (arthroscopic labral repair, periacetabular osteotomy) and minimally invasive direct anterior total hip arthroplasty. His knee practice has a particular focus on statistical models, patient-level prognostication, and patellofemoral instability. He serves as Research Chair for the Division of Sports Medicine, with a mission to provide patients with modern solutions to modern challenges, while ensuring that treatments are well-supported through evidence-based medicine and tailored, individualized treatment plans.  

 





Drew A. Lansdown, MD, is an Associate Professor in Residence at the University of California, San Francisco in Sports Medicine & Shoulder Surgery. He is the Associate Vice Chair for Clinical Research and Associate Program Director for the UCSF orthopedic surgery residency program. His clinical practice includes treatment of knee, shoulder, and elbow conditions, with interests in knee ligament reconstruction, knee cartilage restoration, patellofemoral joint disorders, shoulder instability, and shoulder arthroplasty surgery. 

He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in biomedical engineering from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He then attended the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago. He graduated with an MD with Honors. He completed his residency at the University of California, San Francisco, and then a fellowship in Sports Medicine & Shoulder Surgery at Rush University in Chicago.  

In his role at UCSF, Dr. Lansdown is actively involved in research and education. His research interests focus on utilizing advanced quantitative MRI sequences to better define injury risk and outcomes after surgery. These sequences can allow for defining the biochemical composition and structure of soft tissue. He has an interest in the variability of bone shape and its influence on injury risk, and he is working to explore the role of specific T-cell populations on the pathogenesis of post-traumatic osteoarthritis after ACL injuries. He is actively involved in teaching residents, fellows, and medical students. 

Dr. Lansdown is a Team Physician for the San Francisco Giants. He has directed the medical coverage for the 2025 US Amateur Golf Championship, the 2021 Women’s US Open Golf Championship, and the 2020 PGA Championship. He is also the Team Physician for the Redwood High School football team.

 

 

 

Eric Strauss, MD, is a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and NYU Langone Orthopedics where he also serves as the Program Director for the largest Orthopedic Surgery Residency Training Program in the United States. As a member of the Division of Sports Medicine, Dr. Strauss’s clinical practice has focused on treating complex pathology affecting the shoulder and knee, including symptomatic cartilage lesions, meniscal insufficiency, lower extremity malalignment, patellofemoral instability, ligament injuries, shoulder instability and rotator cuff pathology. For the last 15 years, he has been the Director of Sports Medicine Research at NYU Langone Orthopedics, spearheading NYU’s Synovial Biomarker Initiative and running many multicenter clinical trials. Dr. Strauss has been fortunate to have the opportunity to lecture on his academic pursuits both nationally and internationally. In 2013, he was selected to participate in the American Orthopaedic Association’s North American Traveling Fellowship where he presented research at academic centers throughout the United States and Canada and in 2017 was selected to be part of the AOA’s American-British-Canadian Traveling Fellowship where he presented throughout England, Scotland, and South Africa.  Dr. Strauss has enjoyed representing NYU as a visiting professor at a number of hospitals across the United States and as highlighted faculty at the annual meetings of the AAOS, AANA, AOSSM, and the International Cartilage Repair Society. He is the father of three children and has been married to his amazing wife Stacey for the last 21 years.
