Pdf Summary
Medial epicondylitis (ME), also known as golfer's elbow, is a condition characterized by degeneration of the common flexor tendon in the elbow. While nonoperative management is often successful, surgical intervention is sometimes necessary. A systematic review was conducted to evaluate the surgical treatment options for ME and their associated patient-reported outcomes (PROs). The review included 16 studies that focused on surgical management and PROs. Three surgical techniques were identified: open, arthroscopic, and percutaneous. The open technique was the most common, followed by arthroscopic and percutaneous techniques. Overall, surgical intervention for ME demonstrated a high success rate, regardless of the technique used. Patients generally experienced an improvement in PROs and were able to return to work and sports with limited complications. The complication rate of surgical treatment was low, ranging from 0% to 20%. However, the review highlighted the need for further research to determine the superiority of one technique over the others. The systematic review concluded that surgical intervention for refractory ME is effective and further investigation is necessary to compare the different surgical techniques.
