Rates of Reporting and Analyzing Patient Sex in Sports Medicine Research: A Systematic Review
Back to course
Pdf Summary
A systematic review of athlete-specific sports medicine literature found that while 93.9% of studies report patient sex, only 34.7% analyze patient sex. The study analyzed articles published between 2017 and 2021 in the three journals of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). Of the 559 studies that met the inclusion criteria, 143 isolated male athletes and 50 isolated female athletes. After excluding these studies, the rate of analyzing patient sex increased to 53.0%. The study also found that rates of analyzing patient sex varied by patient population, with college athletes analyzed at higher rates. The analysis highlights that sex-specific differences exist within the field of sports medicine, but many studies fail to use patient sex as a variable for analysis. The authors suggest that expanding the role of injury surveillance systems to collect data on a broader range of athletes could increase the availability of high-quality data for sex-specific analysis. It is important to consider patient sex in sports medicine research to ensure equitable and evidence-based care for athletes. Further research is needed to better understand the role that patient sex plays in sports-related injuries and outcomes.
