A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to determine the rate of athletes who fail to return to sports after arthroscopic Bankart repair and to identify the specific reasons for their failure to return. A total of 17 studies were included, reporting on 813 athletes. The weighted rate of failure to return to sports after arthroscopic Bankart repair was estimated to be 15.6%. The most common reasons cited for failure to return included recurrent or persistent instability (33.3%), fear of reinjury (17.7%), and apprehension (9.9%). Other reasons included changes in priorities or personal interest, lack of time, and discomfort or pain with sports.<br /><br />Shoulder-related reasons were the primary factor preventing athletes from returning to sports, with 81.7% of athletes citing shoulder-dependent reasons. The rate of failure to return to sports was significantly higher for shoulder-dependent reasons compared to shoulder-independent reasons.<br /><br />The study highlights the importance of identifying the reasons preventing athletes from returning to sports after arthroscopic Bankart repair. Surgeons can use this information to counsel athletes regarding postoperative expectations and address any hesitations or concerns they may have about returning to sports. It is important to consider both physical and psychological factors when assessing an athlete's ability to return to sports and to provide appropriate support and guidance throughout the rehabilitation process. Further research is needed to better understand the factors influencing the rate of failure to return and to develop strategies to improve outcomes for athletes undergoing arthroscopic Bankart repair.
