CC2022: Return to Sport After Surgical Management of Posterior Shoulder Instability: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (March 2022)
Back to course
Pdf Summary
A systematic review and meta-analysis of 32 studies found that surgical management of posterior shoulder instability resulted in a high rate of return to sport (88%) and significant pain reduction. However, only two-thirds of athletes were able to return to their preinjury level of sport. Contact athletes had higher rates of overall return to sport (94%) and return to preinjury levels (73%) compared to throwing athletes. The use of suture anchors in arthroscopic capsulolabral repairs reduced the risk of postoperative failure. Further research is needed to develop consensus criteria and a return-to-sport protocol for these athletes.
