Relationship Between Timing of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction and Chondral Injuries: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (November 2022)

Pdf Summary
Delaying ACL reconstruction surgery increases the risk and severity of chondral injuries, according to a systematic review and meta-analysis. Rates of chondral injuries were higher when surgery was performed later than 3 months after the injury, with even higher rates after 12 months. High-grade chondral injuries were more prevalent beyond 12 months. Early ACL reconstruction, preferably within 3 months of injury, may protect articular cartilage. However, the decision for surgery should be based on individual patient factors. Further research is needed to determine the optimal timing for ACL reconstruction in different patient populations.
