Pdf Summary
Tissue adhesives (TAs) have shown promise as an alternative or complement to traditional tissue repair methods. In the field of sports medicine, TAs have been explored for the treatment of meniscal tears. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the current evidence on the clinical use of TAs for meniscal repair. Ten studies were included, covering a total of 352 meniscal repairs. The review found that TAs, particularly fibrin-based TAs, showed good results as either an augmentation or primary repair technique for various types of meniscal tears. However, the lack of high-quality comparative evidence supporting routine TA use and the absence of an ideal TA specifically designed for meniscal repair were highlighted. In vitro and in vivo studies in animals have demonstrated promising results for different groups of TAs, but there is a need for more research, including basic science and clinical studies, to develop new materials and test their suitability for use in meniscal repair. The review concluded that while TAs have potential for tissue repair and meniscal repair, caution should be exercised until sufficient evidence for their use is established. Further research is needed to explore the viability of TAs as a clinical treatment option for meniscal tears.
