Criteria for Return to Play After Hip Arthroscopy in the Treatment of Femoroacetabular Impingement: A Systematic Review (October 2022)
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This systematic review examined the rates and criteria for return to play (RTP) after hip arthroscopy for the treatment of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) in athletes. The review included 130 studies with a total of 14,069 patients who underwent hip arthroscopy. The overall rate of RTP after hip arthroscopy for FAI was 85.4% over a mean period of 6.6 months. However, only 72.6% of athletes were able to return to their preinjury level of play. The most commonly reported criterion for determining RTP was time, with 3 to 6 months being the most common timeframe reported. Other criteria included absence of pain, full strength, full range of motion, and functional testing. The review suggests that the high rate of RTP after hip arthroscopy for FAI could be improved by developing validated rehabilitation criteria for safe RTP. This could potentially enhance clinical outcomes and increase the percentage of athletes returning to their preinjury level of play.
