Pdf Summary
A systematic review and meta-analysis compared the clinical efficacy of bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) and stromal vascular fraction (SVF) injections in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). The analysis included 10 studies with a total of 472 patients, with 233 patients receiving BMAC and 239 patients receiving SVF injections. The primary outcomes measured were pain, assessed using the visual analog scale (VAS), and knee function, assessed using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis (WOMAC) index.

Both BMAC and SVF injections resulted in significant improvements in VAS scores for pain and WOMAC scores for knee function. However, SVF injections were found to be more effective than BMAC injections in reducing knee pain. The results showed that patients who received SVF injections experienced greater pain reduction compared to those who received BMAC injections. The clinical effect on knee function was similar between the two groups.

The studies included in the analysis had variations in preparation methods and cell composition of the injection products, which could have influenced the outcomes. Complications after the injections were reported in both BMAC and SVF studies, but no serious adverse events were reported.

In conclusion, both BMAC and SVF injections were found to be effective in improving symptoms in patients with knee OA. SVF injections were more effective in reducing knee pain. However, the results should be interpreted with caution due to the variations in preparation methods and lack of reporting standards in the studies. Further research is needed to determine the optimal cell preparation methods and rehabilitation protocols after stem cell injections for knee OA.
