Pdf Summary
A systematic review was conducted to investigate the role of arthroscopic management for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) in adolescents. The review included 10 studies with a total of 406 adolescents who underwent arthroscopic surgery for FAI. The mean follow-up was 30.4 months. At a mean follow-up of 28.0 months, 94% of the adolescents had returned to sport. All the scores of interest, including visual analog scale, modified Harris Hip Score, Non-Arthritic Hip Score, Hip Outcome Score, and Tegner score, showed improvement at the final follow-up. Complications occurred in 1.1% of procedures, and revision arthroscopy was performed in 4.7% of procedures.

The results of this systematic review suggest that arthroscopic surgery in adolescents with FAI achieves excellent outcomes, with a high rate of return to sport. The scores used to measure pain, function, and quality of life all showed improvement at the final follow-up. The rate of complications was low, and the rate of revision surgery was also relatively low. The findings of this review support the use of arthroscopic surgery as a treatment option for adolescents with FAI. However, the retrospective nature of most of the included studies and the relatively low number of studies included in the review are limitations. Further prospective studies and randomized trials are needed to provide more reliable evidence on the role of arthroscopic surgery for FAI in adolescents.
