Video Summary
In this video, Emma Johnson, a fourth-year medical student and former Rothman Research Fellow, presents on the differences in the severity and location of patella-femoral cartilage damage between patients with and without patella alta in patellar instability. Patella alta increases the risk of patellar dislocation up to four times due to changes in knee biomechanics. The study aimed to analyze preoperative cartilage damage on MRI in these patients and found that individuals with patella alta had less severe cartilage damage overall compared to those with normal patellar height. The location of cartilage injuries was similar between the two groups. The study, however, has limitations including the absence of patient-reported outcomes and variations in MRI quality.
