2024 AOSSM/NHL Hockey Summit-Open Ice: More Post-Game Points

Video Transcription

Video Summary

The conference session delved into various medical aspects pertinent to the care of hockey players, with a particular focus on sleep, recovery, and the use of biologics in sports injuries.

Kim Harmer highlighted the critical role of sleep in athletic performance, emphasizing its significance for training, recovery, and overall well-being. She referenced statements from the International Olympic Committee and the NCAA, underlining the necessity of proper sleep education, assessment, and treatment. Sleep disruptions, such as insufficient sleep, sleep disorders, and insomnia, significantly impact athletes, contributing to injuries like concussions and prolonged recovery periods. Harmer advocated for cognitive behavioral therapy as the gold standard for insomnia, while also considering pharmacological interventions when necessary.

The panel then shifted to the discussion of injury management using biologics. They presented various case studies, including issues such as degenerative meniscus tears, femoroacetabular impingement, and MCL tears, discussing the roles of corticosteroids, hyaluronic acid (HA), platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC).

The consensus was cautious but positive about the use of PRP and HA, with some advocating for their combined use in certain hip pathologies. For knee degenerative conditions and sports hernias, PRP and HA were commonly considered, but cortisone was often a first-line to reduce acute inflammation.

Discussion on shockwave therapy and therapeutic ultrasound for chronic injuries highlighted their increasing utilization, with a focus on whether these modalities could help manage chronic tendinopathies effectively.

Overall, the session underscored the importance of using evidence-based, minimally invasive interventions to manage athletic injuries, optimizing recovery while mitigating the risks associated with more invasive procedures. Continued advancements in biologics promise to enhance the efficacy of treatment protocols in sports medicine.
