Video Summary
In this video, Steve Broglio, director of the Michigan Concussion Center at the University of Michigan, discusses the CARE Consortium and its research on concussion management. The CARE Consortium was launched in 2014 to understand the natural history of concussion and evaluate different concussion management tools. The study included 30 sites across the United States and involved baseline evaluations of varsity athletes, evaluations after injury, and evaluations at different time points during recovery. The study found that symptoms were the number one predictor of concussion, and the SCAT5 tool captured all the information needed to support the clinical exam. The study also found that concussion recovery may take up to one month, and there were no differences in recovery time between male and female athletes in comparable sports. Additionally, the study showed that there were no between-sport differences in recovery time. The video highlights the progress made in concussion management and expresses gratitude to the individuals involved in the CARE Consortium.
